Historical background of town and its families.
A historical glance about the establishment of the school
Since the early 19th century, this town or region was called Achrafieh in reference to Sultan Khalil Al-Achraf who came to it and was followed by some noble men. This information is according to what the present mayor of Achrafieh told us.
Ordinary people called this region Achrafieh because it is located on a hill which is 100m above sea level that overviews its surroundings regions. Its most important families are : Twayneh, Trad, Fernieneh, Bustros, Jbeily, Yared and Dehan. This school was founded in 1953 and was named “The new high school for girls”. It’s location was in Sersok quarter near the Orthodox Arch-bishopric, then it moved in 1969 to a new building that was constructed by Mr. Salim Shahroury under the request of the Ministry of Education that time in St. Peter and Paul Street, Fassouh quarter. In 1997 its name became “Laur Mghayzel highschool for girls” due to the request applied by “The Lebanese Women University Committee” to the Minister of Education that time Mr. John Obeid.
Laure Mghayzel is a lebanese lawyer, a pioneer who struggled for the sake of protecting human rights. For fifty years she struggled to make the lebanese legislation impartial and honest for the sake of women’s rights. She regulated many laws and urged to confirm a universal agreement in this field. She was elected as first vice president for “The Women Universal Committee” of Human Rights in the United Nations.
