Internet Café between reality and hope

  • Introduction

Internet cafes have greatly spread in the world.

The original purpose behind the openings of the internet café was to create new job fields, to achieve some profit, and to compensate for the lack of access to internet at homes.

Through these cafes, young people were able to search for information within the great library that is the internet. With time, it has also become a great social communication tool that the youth used in order to fill their leisure time and for entertainment.

It is seldom we find a Lebanese town that doesn’t have internet café centers where most of its clients are young people. It is in these youth we can discover whether internet cafes are a blessing or a curse, through they are the ones who understand the role of internet cafes and their impact on their daily lives.

There is no doubt that the work of Internet cafe is a profitable business financially for their owners.  The question is:  Are these cafes  profitable for the youth on the moral and intellectual levels?

    The Problem

Internet cafes have become broadly attractive to young people/. These cafes imposed a new reality, which is their positive role in providing knowledge vis-ŕ-vis their negative role in becoming an unbeneficial entertainment tool.  The students themselves have an important role in evaluating the phenomenon of internet cafes, and in finding ways to promote and highlight their positive aspects while trying to work on decreasing and eventually eliminating their negative impact.

    Objectives

The objectives of the project are as follows:

    1.      To conceptualization the role of Internet cafes in young people’s lives in different cultures and societies

    2.      To come up with a vision to develop the positive aspects of Internet cafes

    3.      To highlight the negative as well as the positive aspect of the roles of these cafes

    4.      To highlight the role of young people to protect themselves and protect their community from the negative aspects o the  Internet

    5.      To develop the idea of working online as a team
